The Eleven in the Upper Room

Chapter 8 of 12

That same night, the two from Emmaus ran back to Jerusalem. They found the Eleven gathered in the upper room, with the doors closed for fear of the Jewish authorities.

And while they were speaking, Jesus appeared in their midst.

Jesus came and stood among them. 'Peace be with you!' He said to them.

John 20:19

The disciples were frightened, certain they were seeing a ghost. So Jesus showed them His hands and His side, asked for food, and ate a piece of broiled fish in front of them.

The detail of the food carries weight, since a ghost has no need to eat and an apparition cannot chew. Luke, the physician, records the moment with the precision of someone determined to rule out any psychological interpretation.

Look at My hands and My feet. It is I Myself. Touch Me and see — for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.

Luke 24:39

Eleven disciples. Plus Cleopas and his companion. Plus Mary Magdalene. Plus Peter and John at the tomb earlier. Plus the other women who had reported in the morning.

But one of the Twelve was missing.

Now Thomas called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.

John 20:24

Eight days later, his own scene would come.
